Rebels sign Welsh international Dominic Day

The Melbourne Rebels have added Welsh international Dominic Day to the second row for the 2017 Super Rugby season.

The 30-year-old has put pen to paper on a one year deal which will see the lock join the Rebels after a ten-year career in the Pro12 (Europe), England Premiership (England) and Top League (Japan).

Day, who made three international appearances since his Test debut against Ireland at Millennium Stadium in August 2015, featured for Wales at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

“Dom is an experienced lock and an accomplished line out caller who brings a physical presence to his game,” Melbourne Rebels Head Coach Tony McGahan said.

“He has leadership qualities having captained Bath and displays the consistent behaviours and work ethic that will be well suited to our club. Dom will assist developing and strengthening our game.”

The 198-centimetre and 116-kilogram forward will bring over 200 games of professional experience to the Rebels.

After 92 appearances for Welsh professional club Scarlets (Pro12) he joined Bath in 2012 where he played 110 games in the England Premiership before a move to Japan with Toyota Verblitz (Top League) in 2016.

Day said he was looking forward to joining the Rebels.

“I’m really excited about the challenge of playing for the Rebels,” Day said.

“Playing overseas in the Pro12 and Premiership I would always watch Super Rugby and enjoyed the attacking style. I think it’s the most exciting competition in the world.

“Super rugby has some of the best and most skillful players in the world and I want to test myself in that arena.

“I’ve heard Melbourne is an amazing city and I look forward to being a part of the Rebels.”
Day will join the Rebels at the conclusion of the Top League season in the new year.

The Melbourne Rising, the Rebels’ underpinning National Rugby Championship team, kick off their 2016 campaign against the Perth Spirit at UWA Sports Park, Perth, on Saturday at 1.00pm (AEST).
