JUNIOR RUGBY GRAND FINAL DAY WRAP

The best of grassroots rugby was on full display at Riviera Reserve in Seaford on Saturday as Southern Districts hosted the 2016 Junior Rugby Grand Final Day.

Cheers erupted from every sideline and tries were plentiful as 20 teams ranging from U11 to U18 faced off throughout the day. Twelve junior clubs were represented across Victoria on the day.

Impressive rugby was played with teams showing skill and poise beyond their years while being cheered on by supporters of all ages.

Wyndham City had the most success on the day, winning three out of the four matches they contested, including an impressive attacking performance to take out the U18A final 41-20 against Power House.

The best comeback of the day came in the U16B final between Footscray and Melton. Footscray dominated the first half, but Melton answered back in the second half by scoring three tries in five minutes. A magnificent full-field, solo-effort got them home in the end to seal the final score at 31-11.

In the U16A final Northern and Wyndham City played out a back and forth game. Northern took their scoring chances to their full ability to claim victory of the match 24-19.

The closest match of the day was the U14B final where a last minute try and tricky conversion by Southern Districts levelled the scores at 7-7. After two periods of extra time the two teams couldn’t be separated and Southern Districts finished as champions thanks to their finish above on the season ladder.

Congratulations to all the teams and players that participated to contribute to the day’s hudge success. A special thanks also goes to the parents, volunteers and match officials whom without Junior Rugby week in and week out would not be possible.
