Rebels confirm Brumbies and Waratahs trials for 2018

The Melbourne Rebels will finalise their preparations for the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby season with trial matches against Australian Conference rivals ACT Brumbies and NSW Waratahs in February.

The two trial matches will bookend the annual Brisbane Global Rugby Tens as the Rebels put the finishing touches ahead of the opening round against the Queensland Reds at AAMI Park on 23 February 2018.

The Rebels will kick-off their pre-season trials when they travel north to play the reigning Australian Conference champions Brumbies on Saturday 3 February at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan, New South Wales.

The two sides split the results in 2017 when the Rebels claimed a thrilling 19-17 victory at AAMI Park before the Brumbies bounced back to respond with a 32-3 win at GIO Stadium in Canberra on the eve of the international break.

Following the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens, from February 9-10 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, the Rebels will hit the road again to play against the Waratahs on Thursday 15 February at Brookvale Oval in Sydney.

“The two trial matches, along with the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens, are a cornerstone of our pre-season preparations and will give us the opportunity to put our hard work into practice in a live competitive environment,” Melbourne Rebels Head Coach Dave Wessels said.

“While the results of pre-season trials count for nothing come round one, the games will provide us with a benchmark against two Australian rivals ahead of the opening round against the Reds.”

“We look forward to getting away and using the opportunities to gel as a group and iron out our preparations on and off the field.”

The refreshed Rebels will make their much-anticipated first appearance at home when they kick-off their 2018 Super Rugby campaign against the Queensland Reds at AAMI Park on Friday 23 February from 7.30pm (AEDT).
