Rebels to face Brumbies in 2019 season-opener

The Melbourne Rebels will open their new season with an Australian Derby against the ACT Brumbies, as SANZAAR today announced the tournament dates for the 20919 Super Rugby competition.

The Rebels season will begin with a Friday night in Canberra on February 15, with the fixture announcement allocating Melbourne eight home matches, two byes and a two-week trip to South Africa in March.

Significantly, there will be no June inbound international matches in 2019, due to Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan later in the year. For fans, Super Rugby will run uninterrupted for 21 weeks.

The tournament’s 15-team, three-Conference format remains the same, with each team playing 16 regular season conference matches that include eight matches within their own Conference (home and away) and four matches against teams from each of the other Conferences (home or away).

The Finals series format will also remain unchanged.

Today’s release includes all tournament match dates and kick-off times, with match venues to be announced later this year.

Further features of the Melbourne Rebels fixture include:

  • Eight matches in Melbourne in 2019 – six on Friday night, one Saturday day match and one Saturday night match
  • The Rebels will compete for the Weary Dunlop Shield against the NSW Waratahs in Rounds 10 and 16, and the Ganbatte Trophy against the Sunwolves in Rounds 8 and 15
  • Outside of the Australian Conference the Rebels will host the Highlanders, Stormers, Bulls and Chiefs in Melbourne
  • The Rebels will not play the Jaguares in 2019
