In 2013 the Rebels list was bolstered with a number of young, exciting players from Australia and New Zealand including Scott Higginbotham while Japanese hooker Shota Horie joined the Club from the Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan.

The Rebels finished the season in 12th place with a franchise-record of 36 points with highlights being the first win against a South African team and the first win against NSW Waratahs to claim the Weary Dunlop Shield.

The 2013 season also featured the British & Irish Lions touring for the first time in 12 years. Melbourne hosted two matches against the tourists; a clash against the Rebels at AAMI Park, and a game against the Wallabies at Etihad Stadium four days later.

At the conclusion of the season the Melbourne Rebels announced that the Foundation shareholders had transferred of their shares to the Victorian Rugby Union after three seasons of private ownership.
